How online therapy works in Portugal

Online therapy is simply therapy by video call rather than in a consulting room. The process, the relationship and the care are the same — only the medium changes. For anyone who lives far from a therapist they connect with, has a full schedule, or prefers to talk from a place where they feel safe, it opens a door that might otherwise stay closed.

It is a regular, confidential conversation between you and a psychologist, held over video. In Portugal you can attend from anywhere in the country — all you need is a stable internet connection and a quiet place where you will not be interrupted during the session.

What a session looks like

The format is simple and agreed with you from the start. Each session lasts about 50 minutes and takes place over Google Meet — you receive a link before the appointment. On your side, all you need is a private, quiet space; frequency is usually weekly at first and adjusts as the work goes on. Everything you share is protected by the professional confidentiality that psychologists are bound to under the code of ethics of the Portuguese Order of Psychologists, and to protect your privacy it helps to make sure you are alone and cannot be overheard.

Is it as effective as in-person therapy?

Research in recent years suggests that, for many of the most common difficulties — anxiety, depressive symptoms, stress, relationship concerns — online therapy can be as effective as in-person work for a good proportion of people. It is not a universal guarantee: what helps depends on the person, the kind of difficulty, and the relationship built with the therapist.

It is often well suited to support with anxiety, depressive periods, relationship difficulties, life transitions, questions of identity, or work-related distress. It is not the right answer for crisis situations that need immediate intervention — such as an acute suicidal crisis or another emergency. In those cases, contact SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) or emergency services straight away.

The best way to know whether this format is yours is to try it. The first step is a free first session, with no obligation to continue — fifty minutes to introduce yourself, talk about what brings you here, and sense whether this is the right space for you. If you prefer, you can write to us first with a question. That is enough.
